Is Fable an interactive reading app?
Partly. Fable is a social reading and tracking app whose interactive side is human: book clubs talk in "spoiler-free chapter rooms", and its own ebook reader lets you annotate, comment and answer discussion prompts inside the book, which it calls interactive ebooks. It does not describe an AI that recaps your book or answers questions about it, and in January 2025 it removed AI-generated reader summaries after a backlash.

How do Fable's chapter rooms work?
In Fable's book clubs you "Spark conversations with your club in organized, spoiler-free chapter rooms and episode rooms", and you can "Read or watch at your own pace or follow the club's suggested milestones". When the club finishes, reviews go in a "reflection room". The protection comes from how discussion is organised by chapter, not from an AI that knows your page. That makes it a chapter lock for people, similar in spirit to Thus Far.
What are Fable's interactive ebooks?
Fable sells ebooks for its own reader and describes them as "EBOOKS DESIGNED FOR INTERACTIVE READING". Inside the book you can "Annotate books with highlights, notes, tabs, comments, and reactions" and "Respond to discussion prompts embedded inside the book", and it says there is a catalog "of over one million interactive ebooks". This is a social, annotation-based meaning of "interactive", different from an AI companion. More in What is an interactive ebook?
Does Fable use AI?
Its listing describes Scout, which gives "personalized book recommendations" and can "randomly select your next read from your TBR". In January 2025 WIRED reported that Fable's AI-generated 2024 reader summaries, made with OpenAI's API, produced offensive comments about some readers; Fable apologised and, after WIRED's story was published, decided to "immediately remove the AI-generated 2024 reading summaries, as well as two other features that used AI." Our journal note looks at what that episode means for reading apps.
What else does it do?
Most of Fable is a reading tracker and social app: lists, reading goals, streaks, stats, half-star reviews, imports from Goodreads and Kindle, TV clubs, and monthly and annual "Reading Wraps". Those features are covered in depth by our sibling site Best Book Tracker Apps.
What does it cost?
The app is free. Fable Plus costs $5.99 a month or $49.99 a year on the US App Store, and individual ebooks are sold in the app.
What does the privacy label say?
- Data used to track you: identifiers.
- Data linked to you: purchases, contact info, user content, search history, identifiers, usage data, diagnostics.
The listing's age rating section also says the app "Contains" advertising. Compare in Reading app privacy labels.
What are its limits as an interactive reading app?
- No AI recap or Q&A about your book. If that is what you want, see Magic Bookmark or Kindle's Story So Far.
- Chapter rooms protect you from people, not from the book. You still need to know where you are.
- Interactive ebooks only inside Fable. Annotation and prompts work in books bought for Fable's reader.
- 18+ on the App Store.
