What do readers ask most about interactive reading apps?
The twelve questions below come up most when readers look for a spoiler-free way to recap, discuss or chat about a book. Each answer is short and links to the page with the detail and sources. Products are named alphabetically and are not ranked.
Questions
- Q1
What app recaps a book up to my page?
Kindle's Story So Far does it for supported Kindle ebooks in the US. Magic Bookmark does it for supported titles in print, ebook or audio on iPhone, finding your page from a photo, the page number or the last phrase you heard. General chatbots can try if you tell them your chapter, but nothing locks them to it. Compare them.
- Q2
Is there a Kindle Story So Far for paperbacks?
Not from Amazon: Story So Far only works inside supported Kindle ebooks. For a print book, an app that finds your page from a photo or page number, such as Magic Bookmark, is the closest equivalent, for the titles it supports.
- Q3
What is the difference between Kindle Story So Far and Ask this Book?
Story So Far gives you a recap up to where you stopped reading. Ask this Book answers your questions about the plot, characters and themes, by default only up to your position, with an option to ask about the whole book. Which to use when.
- Q4
Can ChatGPT summarize a book without spoilers?
It can try, but it cannot guarantee it: it does not know your page, and it usually knows the ending. Ask for a recap (not a summary) up to a named chapter, and tell it to leave out anything it is unsure about. Full guide.
- Q5
How do page-locked recaps avoid spoilers?
The app finds your place, matches it to the book's text and cuts everything after your page out of what the AI may use, before it writes. The pipeline, drawn.
- Q6
Can I chat with characters from a book I'm reading without spoilers?
Yes, with an app that limits what the character knows to your place. Magic Bookmark says its characters only know the story up to your page; a general chatbot playing a character has no such lock. How character chat works.
- Q7
Do AI reading companions work with audiobooks?
Some do. Magic Bookmark added audiobook support on 27 October 2026: you enter the last phrase you heard. Thus Far accepts a screenshot of your Audible screen to save your chapter. Kindle's Story So Far and Ask this Book work inside Kindle ebooks.
- Q8
Are AI reading companions free?
Several are. Kindle's features come with supported Kindle books, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini have free plans, and Fable and Thus Far are free with optional paid plans. Magic Bookmark's first credit is free, then each book uses one credit, from $4.99 down to $1.40 in a 50-credit pack.
- Q9
Is Kindle Ask this Book available on Android?
Not yet, according to Amazon's page updated in July 2026. It is on the Kindle iOS app in the US, and Amazon says it will expand to Kindle devices and the Android app. Status note.
- Q10
Which AI reading apps track you?
On their App Store privacy labels, Fable and Magic Bookmark list identifiers as data used to track you, and Thus Far lists purchases, identifiers and usage data. The Kindle, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini labels list none. All seven labels.
- Q11
Do authors get paid when I use an AI reading companion?
We found nothing showing that they do. The Authors Guild says Kindle's Ask this Book pays authors nothing and offers no opt-out; Magic Bookmark's page for authors offers removal on request but does not describe payments. Authors are paid when you buy their book or your library buys it. Both sides of the debate.
- Q12
What are interactive books for kids?
Usually children's books you touch, lift, pull or listen to, such as touch-and-feel, lift-the-flap, pop-up and sound books, plus digital picture books. That is a different meaning from the AI reading apps on this site. Interactive books for kids.
