A different meaning of the term: this page is not part of our AI reading companion coverage.

What are interactive books?

Most of the time, "interactive books" means children's books the reader handles or plays with: touch-and-feel, lift-the-flap, pop-up and sound books, and digital picture books with narration or tappable pictures. The term also covers gamebooks and interactive fiction, where you choose what happens next. The rest of this site is about something different: apps that talk with teen and adult readers about the book they are reading.

What kinds of interactive children's books are there?

Interactive children's books are books that need the reader to do something. Common types:

  • Touch-and-feel books. Textures to stroke on each page. Dorothy Kunhardt's Pat the Bunny (1940) is often named as the first. Many are board books, with thick pages for small hands.
  • Movable books. Pop-ups, flaps, pull-tabs, tunnel books and turning wheels (volvelles). Lift-the-flap books are a type of movable book.
  • Hidden-object books. Pages where children search for a character or item, such as the Where's Wally? (Where's Waldo?) and I Spy series.
  • Sound and read-along books. Books with buttons that play sounds, books with audio recordings, and electronic systems with a pen that reads the page aloud.
  • Digital picture books. Ebooks and apps with narration, sound effects and word pronunciation.

What about choose-your-own-path books?

  • Gamebooks ask the reader to make decisions that change the story, sending you to a different page or paragraph at each choice.
  • Interactive fiction is the computer version: text-based stories and games where you type or choose what to do next.

Both are written for adults too; see Interactive books for adults.

How is that different from an interactive reading app?

On this site, an interactive reading app is software that responds to a book you are reading elsewhere: it recaps the story so far, answers questions or lets you chat about it. These apps are aimed at teens and adults. On the US App Store listings we read on 4 November 2026, Magic Bookmark and Thus Far show 13+, and Fable shows 18+. They are not designed for young children. See What is an interactive reading app? for the full picture, and AI character chat and teen readers for older children.

Where should you look for interactive books for kids?

  • Your local library. Children's librarians can point you to board books, touch-and-feel and lift-the-flap titles, and many libraries lend read-along kits.
  • A bookstore's baby, toddler and novelty sections. Interactive formats are usually shelved there.
  • App stores' kids categories, for digital picture books, with the usual care about age ratings and in-app purchases.

How do you choose a good interactive book for a young child?

A few questions help, whatever the format:

  1. Is the interaction part of the story? The best lift-the-flap and touch-and-feel books make the action the point of the page: lifting the flap reveals what the words promised. Interaction that has nothing to do with the story is just a toy.
  2. Is it sturdy enough? Board books with thick pages survive small hands; delicate pop-ups suit older children or reading together.
  3. Does it invite talk? Hidden-object pages and questions on the page give adult and child something to talk about, which is much of the value of reading together.
  4. For apps: does narration highlight the words? Read-along apps that highlight each word as it is spoken connect sound to print. Apps that play animations without words do less for reading.
  5. For apps: what are the age rating, ads and in-app purchases? Check the store listing before you hand over a device.

When does a child grow into an AI reading companion?

Later than you might think. The AI reading companions on this site are built for teens and adults reading long novels: they recap where you are, answer questions and, in one case, let you chat with characters. The store tools that teens may meet first are inside apps families already use, such as Kindle's Story So Far, Google Play Books' Book insights and Spotify's audiobook Recaps. Our guide to AI character chat and teen readers covers age ratings and what parents can check.

A useful rule of thumb: if a child still needs help keeping track of who is who in a chapter book, a parent reading along and talking about the story does the same job as a cast list, with no screen and no data collection. Save the apps for the long, many-character novels of the teen years.

What each format is good for

FormatGood forWatch out for
Touch-and-feel and board booksBabies and toddlers exploring with their handsSmall parts on novelty add-ons
Lift-the-flap and pop-up booksPrediction and surprise ("what's behind the door?")Flaps tear; read together at first
Hidden-object booksAttention, vocabulary and talking togetherCan turn into a race rather than a read
Sound and read-along booksHearing words and rhythm, independent listeningRepetitive sounds; batteries
Digital picture booksNarration with highlighted words, travelAds, in-app purchases and screen time
Gamebooks for older childrenChoices, rereading to find other endingsSome are written for adults

No format is better than reading aloud together; interactive features work best as a reason to do more of it.

What about building a family reading habit?

That is a different job from interactive books: tracking and encouraging reading together, with the books you already have. Apps exist for that too. One example is YOMU - Family Reading Habits, from Yomu Inc., the maker of Magic Bookmark. Its US App Store listing, read on 2 November 2026, describes it this way:

  • What it does. Family members log reading time (timed live or added afterwards, for reading done at school), build daily streaks, earn achievements and "gems", and get book recommendations by age and interest.
  • Who it is for. Profiles for each child and for parents on one device; rated 4+ in the Education category.
  • Price. Free for tracking; an optional subscription ($9.99 a month or $95.99 a year) adds Family Rewards that parents set up and approve.
  • Device. iPhone, iOS 16.4 or later. English.

It is a reading-habit tracker, not an interactive book: it does not tell or change the story. We have not tested it hands-on.
