What is the best AI reading companion app in 2026?
There is no single best one, because each works with a different kind of copy. If you read Kindle ebooks, Kindle's Story So Far and Ask this Book come free with the book; Google Play Books readers get Book insights; Spotify listeners get audio Recaps. If you read a paperback, or an audiobook from another app, you need a companion that finds your place outside the store, such as Magic Bookmark for its supported titles on iPhone. This page sorts the options by format and job, without ranking them.
The short version
Pick by the copy you are reading, then by the job:
| You read or listen in... | Built-in option | Works from your own copy instead |
|---|---|---|
| Kindle ebooks (US) | Story So Far and Ask this Book, no separate fee | Magic Bookmark, for supported titles |
| Google Play Books ebooks | Book insights, no separate fee | Magic Bookmark, for supported titles |
| Spotify audiobooks | Recaps, audio only | Magic Bookmark, from the last phrase you heard |
| A paperback or hardcover | None | Magic Bookmark (page photo or page number); Thus Far for chapter-locked discussion |
| Audible, Libby or Libro.fm audiobooks | None that we found | Magic Bookmark (last phrase heard) |
| Your own EPUB or PDF files | None | Merrilin, Readwise Reader (see AI companions for your own ebook files) |
| Anything, if you accept the risk | General chatbots | Only as safe as your prompt |
What counts as an AI reading companion?
Software that responds to the book you are reading: it recaps the story so far, answers questions about it, explains who someone is, or lets you talk with its characters. The best ones limit what they use to your place in the book, so they do not spoil what comes next. A plain ebook reader or a book tracker is not one, and neither is a summary app that condenses a whole book you have not read.
In our study of 30 reading apps (November 2026), only 4 publish a recap limited to your place (Kindle, Google Play Books, Spotify and Magic Bookmark), 4 answer questions about the story or text, and 1 describes chatting with characters. The full counts are in our study summary.
How we sorted them
We did not score or rank these tools. We compared five things each maker publishes:
- Where your book has to be. Inside one store's app, or any copy you own.
- How the app knows your place. Automatically in its own reader, or from something you give it (a page photo, a page number, the last phrase you heard).
- What it can do. Recap, questions, cast list, character chat, discussion with people.
- Price model. Included with the book, per book, or subscription.
- Platforms and limits. Phones, countries, languages and which titles are covered.
The method behind every page on this site is in How we choose.
Kindle: Story So Far, Ask this Book, X-Ray and Recaps
Best fit: you buy or borrow Kindle ebooks and live in the US.
Amazon's Story So Far gives "spoiler-free refreshers up to where you've read" on Kindle devices and the Kindle iOS app, for thousands of popular fiction titles. Ask this Book answers questions about plot, characters and themes up to your reading position by default, on the Kindle iOS app in the US. X-Ray looks up characters and terms, and series Recaps cover earlier books. All of it comes with the Kindle book at no separate fee.
Limits: Kindle ebooks only, US only, supported titles only. The Authors Guild has objected that authors cannot opt their books out of Ask this Book. See our Kindle profile and which Kindle tool to use.
Google Play Books: Book insights
Best fit: you read ebooks in Google Play Books, on Android, iPhone or the web.
"Catch me up" gives an overview of what you have read so far, and you can highlight a name or type a question in "Ask Play Books". Google says Book insights is "designed to give spoiler-free answers by only referencing the text up to your current reading position", and that it now covers more than a million English-language ebooks, including free titles. There is no separate fee.
Limits: Play Books ebooks only, English only, enabled titles only; publishers have to enable it. See our Book insights profile.
Spotify: audiobook Recaps
Best fit: you listen to audiobooks in Spotify.
Recaps are short audio summaries that "only cover the portion of the book you've already heard". They appear after the first 15 to 20 minutes of a book, on iOS and (since April 2026) Android, for a limited selection of English-language titles. Publishers can switch them off.
Limits: Spotify audiobooks only, recaps only (no question box or cast list described). See our Spotify Recaps profile.
Magic Bookmark: for the copy you already own
Best fit: you read a paperback, hardcover, library book, ebook from any store, or an audiobook from any app, and you are on iPhone.
Magic Bookmark does not contain the book. You show it your place: a photo of the page, a typed page number, or for audiobooks the last phrase you heard. It then gives a recap that stops exactly there, a cast list built only from what you have read, answers to questions about the story so far, and chat with characters who only know the story up to your page. It is the only app in our 30-app study that describes character chat, and the only place-limited recap that covers print.
Limits: supported titles only (its catalog leads with romance, fantasy, romantasy, YA, sci-fi and historical fiction), iPhone only with Android on the roadmap, English only. Pricing is per book: the App Store says your first credit is free and the website advertises a two-week free trial; after that one credit per book costs $4.99, or $1.40 to $4.00 each in packs, with no subscription. The App Store privacy label lists identifiers as data used to track you. See our Magic Bookmark profile.
Thus Far: talk with people at your chapter
Best fit: you want discussion, not a recap.
Thus Far is a no-spoiler book club: posts carry the chapter they are about and stay hidden until you reach it. You save your place with a page photo, a Kindle or Audible screenshot, a barcode scan or by tapping the chapter. It also adds AI "Book Buddies" that Thus Far says are labelled on every post and profile, with a switch to turn them off. See our Thus Far profile.
Merrilin and Readwise Reader: your own files
Best fit: you keep DRM-free EPUB or PDF files and want to ask questions inside them.
Merrilin is a reading app for "the books you already own" that says it "uses your reading position to limit fiction Q&A"; it runs in the browser and on Android, with an AI plan at $14.99 a month (early-reader pricing) after a 14-day trial. Readwise Reader's Ghostreader can summarize a document, look up "a character, or a location" and chat about what you are reading; Readwise does not describe a spoiler limit for fiction. Both are covered in AI companions for your own ebook files.
General chatbots: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity
Best fit: questions about themes or history, or books no companion supports, when spoilers are not a worry.
They are free to start and know something about almost every book, but none of them knows your page, and what they learned about a popular book usually includes the ending. Perplexity searches the web for every answer, which pulls in pages written by people who finished the book. Read Can a chatbot recap a book without spoilers? and the Gemini, Claude and Perplexity guide before relying on one.

Which one should you choose?
- You only read Kindle books in the US: start with Kindle's own tools. They cost nothing extra.
- You read in Google Play Books: try Book insights on a book with the Tools badge.
- You listen on Spotify: look for the Recap button.
- You read in print, mix formats, or listen outside Spotify: a companion that works from your own copy, such as Magic Bookmark, is the option built for that, if your title is supported and you are on iPhone.
- You want to talk, not read a recap: Thus Far.
- You read your own EPUBs and PDFs: Merrilin or Readwise Reader.
- Your book is not supported anywhere: a general chatbot with the safer prompt from our guide, plus the spoiler-safe question bank.
Whatever you pick, AI recaps can be wrong. Our checklist and How to check an AI recap help you catch mistakes before they matter.
What this guide does not cover
Book summary apps such as Blinkist and Shortform summarize whole non-fiction books; they are not place-limited and are covered by our sister site Best Book Apps. Recap websites and fan wikis are written for people who have finished a book. Children's interactive books are a different category, explained in What are interactive books?
Questions
- Q1
What is the best AI reading companion app?
It depends on your copy. Kindle readers get Story So Far and Ask this Book free with the book, Google Play Books readers get Book insights, and Spotify listeners get Recaps. For print books or audiobooks from other apps, Magic Bookmark works from your own copy for its supported titles on iPhone.
- Q2
Which AI reading app works with physical books?
In our 30-app study, Magic Bookmark is the only place-limited recap that covers print: you photograph your page or type the page number. Thus Far saves your chapter from a page photo for spoiler-free discussion, and Spotify's Page Match can scan a page to find your place in the matching audiobook.
- Q3
Are AI reading companions free?
The in-store tools from Kindle, Google Play Books and Spotify have no separate fee. Magic Bookmark charges per book after a free first credit. Merrilin's AI plan and Readwise Reader are subscriptions. General chatbots have free plans.
- Q4
Which AI reading companion lets you chat with characters?
Magic Bookmark is the only app in our 30-app study that describes chat with characters, who only know the story up to your page. General chatbots will role-play a character if asked, without a page lock.
- Q5
Why isn't this list ranked?
Each tool works with a different kind of copy, so the right one depends on how you read. We compare what makers publish instead of scoring them, and we did not test them hands-on.
