Summary of a desk study of makers' own materials. Not a hands-on test. Full method and data at the canonical study.

How many reading apps have AI recaps, story Q&A or character chat?

Very few. Of 30 reading apps checked against their own listings and help pages on 4 November 2026, 4 publish an AI-style recap limited to your place, 4 answer questions about the story or text, 2 generate a cast or character list, and 1 (Magic Bookmark) describes chatting with characters. What separates them is how each one knows where you are. This is a summary; the full study and dataset are on our sister site Book Recap Apps.

The 30 apps include ebook and audiobook stores (Kindle, Apple Books, Google Play Books, Kobo, Audible, Spotify, Everand, Libro.fm, Libby, Hoopla, Storytel, NOOK), trackers (Goodreads, The StoryGraph, Hardcover, Fable, Literal, Bookly, Basmo, BookBuddy, Bookmory, Book Tracker, Readory, Slovo), reading tools (Readwise Reader, Readwise Books, Speechify, Blinkist), and the recap and club apps Magic Bookmark and Thus Far.

How page-locked features know where you are

  • Inside the store (Kindle, Google Play Books, Spotify). The app already knows your exact position because you read or listen in it. Kindle's Ask this Book answers "up to your current reading position", with an option to ask about the whole book. Spotify says Recaps cover "only the portion of the book you've already heard". Google says Book insights only references the text up to your current reading position.
  • Outside the store (Magic Bookmark). It does not contain the book. You give it your place with a photo of the page, a typed page number, or the last words you heard, and its recap, cast list and character chat stop there.
  • From your own notes (Basmo). Its "Ask the book" answers come "drawn from your own notes", and its Recap turns your notes into a short listen.
  • General documents (Readwise Reader). Ghostreader can "ask questions, define terms, simplify complex language"; spoiler handling is not described.

Labelled AI in social reading

Thus Far adds eight "Book Buddies" that post at each chapter; the app says they are "generated by Thus Far and labelled as Book Buddies on every post and profile", and one switch turns them off. See our Thus Far profile.

Authors and publishers

Spotify lets publishers switch Recaps off for all or specific titles and says it is "not using audiobook content for LLM training purposes or voice generation". Google says some books are not eligible because "the publisher hasn't enabled the feature". The Authors Guild raised concerns about Kindle's Ask this Book, saying the feature was added without permission and that "so far there is no way for publishers or authors to opt their books out" (statement last modified 7 January 2026). Privacy labels of the AI-feature apps

All 30 apps publish an App Store privacy label; 12 list data used to track you. Among the apps with Yes or Partial AI features, Magic Bookmark, Basmo, Spotify, Thus Far and Blinkist list tracking data; Kindle, Google Play Books and Readwise Reader do not. Our privacy label table shows what each category means.

Method and limits, in brief

  • Primary sources only: App Store and Google Play listings, makers' help pages, blogs and newsrooms, each read on 4 November 2026 with a US storefront.
  • "Not published" means the maker's own materials do not describe a feature. It is not proof the feature is absent.
  • A count of features is not a measure of quality or accuracy. We did not test any app hands-on.
  • The full dataset (CSV and JSON), all 30 rows, and the complete method and limitations are in the canonical study.
