What do AI reading companions cost in Q4 2026?

AI reading features are priced three ways. Some come bundled with the book at no separate fee (Kindle's Story So Far, Google Play Books' Book insights). Some sit inside a general subscription (Readwise Reader's Ghostreader, from $7.99 a month billed yearly; Blinkist's AI in PRO). One is priced per book: Magic Bookmark, where a recap, cast list, Q&A and character chat locked to your page cost one credit per book, from $1.40 to $4.99, with the first book free. This summarises our sister site's price index.

What the pricing model tells you

  • Bundled features are free but fenced. Kindle's and Google's recaps cost nothing extra and only work inside ebooks from their own stores. Spotify's Recaps only work on audiobooks you play in Spotify.
  • Subscriptions charge for a toolbox. Readwise, Blinkist and Speechify bill monthly or yearly whether you use the AI feature or not. Yearly billing saves 31.6% to 60% on the summary and text-to-speech apps in the index.
  • Per-book pricing ties cost to use. A Magic Bookmark credit covers one whole book, never expires and has no subscription. Two supported books a month on 10-packs is $7.00.

Worked example: a year of catching up

Say you come back to 12 books a year after a break and want a recap each time.

Your situationWhat it costs for the recaps alone
All 12 are Kindle ebooks with Story So Far, in the US$0 extra
All 12 are Play Books ebooks with Book insights$0 extra
All 12 are print or mixed formats, supported by Magic BookmarkFirst book free, then 11 credits: $39.98 (one 10-pack at $34.99 plus one single credit at $4.99)
You read in Readwise Reader$95.88 a year (Reader only), whether or not you use Ghostreader

Credits never expire, so a heavier reader can buy the 50-pack at $69.99 instead, which works out at $1.40 a book. The app's two-week free trial on the website, if you start with it, changes the first weeks' cost; we have not counted it here.

Where you buy changes the price

The iPhone app's purchase list does not always match the web. Readwise Reader's App Store list shows $12.99 monthly and $119.99 yearly items alongside $8.99 and $95.90 items; Speechify's shows a $139.99 Premium item. Magic Bookmark's credits are App Store purchases, and its website separately advertises a two-week free trial.

Questions

  1. Q1

Is Kindle's Story So Far free?

There is no separate fee; it is part of Kindle Recaps for eligible Kindle ebooks in the US.

  2. Q2

Is Google Play Books Book insights free?

Google does not charge separately for it. You need an enabled ebook in Play Books, and some enabled titles are free.

  3. Q3

Do AI reading companions need a subscription?

Not always. Magic Bookmark is priced per book with no subscription; Readwise, Blinkist and Speechify are subscriptions.

  4. Q4

Can a general chatbot replace these?

The index does not price chatbots. Chatbots do not know which page you are on unless you tell them, which is the problem page-locked tools are built to solve.
