Desk review from Google's help page, Google's two announcements and the App Store listing. We did not test Book insights hands-on. Unranked.

What is Google Play Books Book insights, and where does it work?

Book insights is an AI reading companion built into Google Play Books. "Catch me up" gives a recap of what you have read so far, and you can highlight a name, place or phrase or type a question in the "Ask Play Books" box. Google says it is designed to give spoiler-free answers by only referencing the text up to your current reading position. It works on select English-language Play Books ebooks, on Android, iOS and the web, with no separate fee.

What does Book insights do?

Google describes three things, all inside the Play Books reader:

  1. Catch me up. Tap the lightbulb icon in the reader's top bar, then "Catch me up", to get "an overview of what you've read so far". Google pitches it for coming back "after a reading break".
  2. Highlight to ask. Select a character's name, a place or a phrase and choose Book insights. Play Books suggests questions about it, and suggested follow-up prompts let you keep going.
  3. Ask your own question. Type into the "Ask Play Books" box. Google's own example is "Was this character introduced earlier in the book?", the kind of question readers of long novels ask all the time.

Google's launch post (16 June 2026) says Book insights "is designed to give spoiler-free answers by only referencing the text up to your current reading position. However, generative AI is experimental and may make mistakes." The help page repeats the warning: "Generative AI can make mistakes", and asks readers to verify critical information.

Which books does it work on?

Only enabled ebooks. The help page says some books are not eligible "either because the publisher hasn't enabled the feature or because of the book's language or formatting", and that "the number of enabled books changes over time". Eligible ebooks show a "Tools" badge on their detail page in the Play Store.

At launch in June 2026 Google named free public-domain classics as examples ("Romeo and Juliet", "Moby Dick", "Pride and Prejudice"). By 2 September 2026 Google said Book insights covered "more than a million English language ebooks, including popular bestsellers and free-of-charge titles". That makes it the largest catalog of the place-limited recap features we track, ahead of Kindle's "thousands of popular fiction titles".

Google does not say whether Book insights works on books you upload to Play Books yourself, so we do not assume it does.

Where does it run?

The June launch covered the Play Books Android app and the web reader. The September announcement added the Play Books iOS app. The help page now lists "Android, iOS, and the web". Google does not limit the feature to one country on the help page; it limits it by language (English) and by title.

Who is it for?

  • Readers who already buy ebooks from Google Play. If your book has the Tools badge, Book insights costs nothing extra and needs no setup.
  • Readers of classics and public-domain titles. Google's free titles were the first enabled.
  • Android readers who want a recap. Kindle's Story So Far is limited to Kindle devices and the Kindle iOS app in the US; Book insights runs on Android.

Who is it not for?

  • Print and audiobook readers. Book insights works inside Play Books ebooks. If you are reading a paperback or listening on another app, it cannot see your place. An outside companion such as Magic Bookmark works from a page photo, a typed page number or the last phrase you heard, for the titles it supports, on iPhone.
  • Readers of non-English books. Google says "select English-language titles".
  • Anyone who needs every answer to be right. Google's own wording is that AI "may make mistakes". The habits in How to check an AI recap apply here too.

What about authors and publishers?

Google's help page says some books are not eligible because "the publisher hasn't enabled the feature". That is a publisher-side switch, which differs from the complaint the Authors Guild made about Kindle's Ask this Book, where it said there was no way for authors or publishers to opt out. The debate is covered in Are AI reading companions fair to authors?

How to try it

  1. Open an enabled ebook in Google Play Books (look for the Tools badge on its Play Store page; free classics are a simple start).
  2. Read to the point you want a recap of.
  3. Tap the lightbulb icon at the top of the reader, then "Catch me up".
  4. To ask about a person or place, highlight the name and choose Book insights, or type in "Ask Play Books".
  5. Use the thumbs up or thumbs down buttons to flag answers that look wrong; Google says feedback helps improve accuracy.

If the feature does not appear, Google's troubleshooting steps are to remove the download and download the ebook again, and to check your connection.

Questions

  1. Q1

What is Catch me up in Google Play Books?

It is the recap part of Book insights. Tap the lightbulb icon in the reader, then Catch me up, to get an overview of what you have read so far in an enabled ebook.

  2. Q2

Is Google Play Books Book insights spoiler-free?

Google says it is designed to give spoiler-free answers by only referencing the text up to your current reading position, and adds that generative AI is experimental and may make mistakes.

  3. Q3

    Does Book insights cost extra?

Google does not charge separately for it. You need the ebook in Play Books, either bought or one of the free enabled titles.

  4. Q4

Does Book insights work on iPhone?

Yes. Google added it to the Play Books iOS app on 2 September 2026. It also runs in the Android app and the web reader.

  5. Q5

  6. Q6

Why is Book insights missing from my book?

Some books are not eligible because the publisher has not enabled it or because of the book's language or formatting. Eligible ebooks show a Tools badge on their Play Store page.
