Desk review from Spotify's newsroom, Spotify for Authors and the App Store listing. We did not test Recaps hands-on. Unranked.

What are Spotify audiobook Recaps, and how do they avoid spoilers?

Recaps are short audio summaries of an audiobook that cover only the part you have already heard. Spotify launched them on 13 November 2025 as an iOS beta for a limited selection of English-language titles and brought them to Android on 15 April 2026. You tap the Recap button on the audiobook's page; the first one appears after about 15 to 20 minutes of listening. Publishers can switch Recaps off for their titles.

How do Recaps work?

When you come back to an audiobook, you tap the Recap button at the top of the audiobook's page and hear "a tailored summary of what's happened so far". Spotify says the first Recap becomes available after you have listened to the first 15 to 20 minutes, and that Recaps are "regularly updated to match your progress". Spotify for Authors adds that a Recap "will only be available if the user has already begun listening".

Recaps are audio, not text. Spotify says they "do not replicate narration or replace the original audiobook in any way", and that they use AI "to help you catch up".

How do Recaps avoid spoilers?

The same way the in-store tools from Kindle and Google do: the app already knows your exact position because you are listening inside it. Spotify's wording is that Recaps "only cover the portion of the book you've already heard", helping you "rejoin a story without spoilers or full book summaries". The Spotify for Authors post puts it as "up until only where they left off".

That is a position lock in software, not an instruction in a prompt, which is the difference explained in How page-locked recaps work. It still does not make every sentence right; an AI summary can misread a scene.

Which audiobooks have Recaps?

A limited set. At launch Spotify said "a limited selection of English-language titles, with plans to expand over time". Its help page for authors says titles published through Spotify for Authors became eligible from 13 December 2025, but "eligibility doesn't guarantee availability", and Spotify will expand Recaps to eligible titles at its discretion. If you see no Recap button, the title probably is not included.

What is Page Match, and how does it fit?

Page Match, announced on 5 February 2026, lets you switch between a print book or ebook and its Spotify audiobook by scanning a page with your phone camera. Scan the page you are reading and Spotify finds the matching moment in the audiobook; go the other way and it tells you whether to flip forward or back in your book. Spotify says that if a title has Recaps enabled, Page Match and Recaps "are available to work together".

Page Match is about moving your place between formats. It does not give you a recap of a paperback you are reading on its own: the recap still covers what you have heard in Spotify.

Who is it for?

  • People who already listen to audiobooks on Spotify. Recaps sit inside the app you already use, with no extra setup.
  • Listeners who doze off or put a book down for weeks. Spotify's own examples are "a busy week" and "a doze during a bedtime story".
  • Readers who switch between a print copy and the Spotify audiobook, using Page Match to move their place.

Who is it not for?

  • Audible, Libby or Libro.fm listeners. Recaps only know your position in Spotify. An outside companion such as Magic Bookmark asks for the last phrase you heard and works across audiobook sources for its supported titles, on iPhone, priced per book.
  • Readers who want to ask questions or look up characters. Spotify describes recaps only; it does not describe a question box or a cast list. Kindle's Ask this Book, Google's Book insights and Magic Bookmark offer questions.
  • Listeners of non-English titles, for now.

What about authors?

Spotify built the strongest rights-holder controls of the in-store tools we track: an opt-out for all or specific titles in Spotify for Authors (changes can take up to 72 hours), and a public statement that audiobook content is not used for LLM training or voice generation. For the wider debate, see Are AI reading companions fair to authors?

Privacy

Spotify's US App Store privacy label lists contact info, identifiers and usage data as data used to track you, and a long list of data linked to you, including purchases, location, contacts, user content and search history. Our privacy label table explains how to read these labels.

Questions

  1. Q1

    Does Spotify have audiobook recaps?

Yes. Recaps are short audio summaries of the part of an audiobook you have already heard. They launched on iOS on 13 November 2025 and reached Android on 15 April 2026, for a limited selection of English-language titles.

  2. Q2

Do Spotify Recaps spoil the book?

Spotify says Recaps only cover the portion of the book you have already heard. They are generated with AI, so a summary can still get a detail wrong.

  3. Q3

    Why don't I see a Recap button?

Recaps are only on selected English-language titles, appear after about 15 to 20 minutes of listening, and can be switched off by the publisher.

  4. Q4

Can Spotify recap an audiobook I'm listening to on Audible?

No. Recaps use your listening position inside Spotify. For audiobooks from other apps you need a companion that finds your place another way, such as Magic Bookmark's last-phrase method for its supported titles.

  5. Q5

Can authors turn Spotify Recaps off?

Yes. Publishers, and authors who publish through Spotify for Authors, can turn Recaps off for all titles or specific ones. Changes can take up to 72 hours.

  6. Q6

Does Spotify use audiobooks to train AI?

Spotify says it is not using audiobook content for LLM training purposes or voice generation.
