What are interactive books for adults?
For adults, "interactive books" usually means one of four things: gamebooks, where your choices send you to different pages; interactive fiction, the text-game version on a computer; interactive or enhanced ebooks, where you annotate, discuss or answer prompts inside the book; and, newest, AI reading companions that let you question or chat about an ordinary novel. Only the last two are about reading a normal book in a new way, and that is what this journal covers.
The four meanings at a glance
| Meaning | How you interact | Does the story change? | Example sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gamebook | Make choices that send you to a different page or section | Yes | Wikipedia: Gamebook |
| Interactive fiction | Type or choose actions in a text-based story or game | Yes | Wikipedia: Interactive fiction |
| Interactive or enhanced ebook | Annotate, comment, react, answer prompts inside the book | No | Fable's interactive ebooks; the Authors Guild's term "enhanced ebooks" |
| AI reading companion | Ask questions, read recaps, chat with characters about a normal book | No | Magic Bookmark, Kindle Ask this Book |
Gamebooks: choose your path
A gamebook asks you to make decisions as you read, and each choice sends you to a different numbered page or paragraph, so the story branches. If you liked choose-your-path books as a child, adult gamebooks keep the same mechanic with grown-up stories. Wikipedia's gamebook article covers the history.
Interactive fiction: the text-game version
Interactive fiction is the software form: a text-based story or game where you type commands or pick options and the story responds. Many "interactive story apps" belong to this family. Wikipedia's interactive fiction article is a good starting point.
Interactive and enhanced ebooks
Here the story stays the same, but the book becomes a place to interact. Fable sells ebooks "designed for interactive reading", where you can "Annotate books with highlights, notes, tabs, comments, and reactions" and "Respond to discussion prompts embedded inside the book". The Authors Guild uses "enhanced ebooks or annotated editions" for products that add layers to a book, and argues that AI features which turn books into "searchable, interactive products" should be licensed. AI reading companions: any book, made interactive
The newest meaning: software that responds to an ordinary novel while you read it. Kindle's Ask this Book and Story So Far do this inside supported Kindle ebooks. Magic Bookmark does it alongside your own print, ebook or audiobook copy of supported titles, including chat with characters who only know the story up to your page. Thus Far makes reading social, with readers at your chapter.
These do not change the story. They help you follow it, which is why spoilers matter so much: see How page-locked recaps work.
Which one is right for you?
- You want to steer the plot: a gamebook or interactive fiction.
- You want to talk about a book as you read it: a chapter-locked social app such as Fable's clubs or Thus Far.
- You want help keeping track of a long novel: an AI reading companion. Start with the comparison table.
- You are shopping for a child: that is a different category; see Interactive books for kids.
Questions
- Q1
What is an interactive book for adults?
Usually a gamebook or interactive fiction, where your choices change the story, or an ebook you can annotate and discuss inside. AI reading companions now add a fourth meaning: asking questions or chatting about an ordinary novel as you read.
- Q2
Are choose-your-own-adventure books for adults a thing?
Yes. Gamebooks with branching choices are written for adults as well as children, and interactive fiction offers the same idea as software.
- Q3
Is an AI reading companion an interactive book?
Not exactly. The book stays the same; the companion is separate software that recaps it, answers questions or lets you chat with its characters.
- Q4
Where can I find interactive story apps?
Interactive fiction and choice-based story apps are their own category, separate from the reading companions on this site. Wikipedia's interactive fiction article lists the main forms.
