Age ratings and content notes are copied from US App Store listings read on 30 October 2026. This page does not assess any app's safety; we did not test the apps.

Are AI reading companions and character chat suitable for teen readers?

Most are rated for teens or adults, not children: on the US App Store, Magic Bookmark, Thus Far, ChatGPT, Gemini and the Kindle app are rated 13+, and Fable and Claude are rated 18+. The ratings tell you about content and features, not about the books a teen chooses, so the useful checks are which app it is, whether the chat is with an AI or with other people, how AI posts are labelled, and what the book itself is like. This is general information, not parenting or safety advice.

Magic Bookmark13+An AI (questions and book characters)Infrequent fantasy violence, crude humor, mature or suggestive themes, horror, and others
Thus Far13+Other readers, plus labelled AI Book Buddies"Contains" messaging and chat, user-generated content, social media

"Infrequent" and "Contains" are the App Store's own labels. The ratings come from the developers' answers to Apple's questions.

What do the ratings not tell you?

  • What the book is like. A companion app follows the book. Magic Bookmark's catalog leans toward romance, fantasy and romantasy titles popular on BookTok, and some of those are written for adults. The book's own audience matters as much as the app's rating.
  • How the AI behaves in a given conversation. AI output varies. Makers say their models can be wrong.
  • Who else is in the room. In a social app, other readers can post. In an AI app, nobody else does.

Is the chat with an AI or with people?

This is the first question to ask, because the risks differ:

  • AI only. In Magic Bookmark, the characters and answers come from an AI, limited to the reader's page. In general chatbots, the AI is open-ended and not limited to the book at all.
  • People. In Fable and Thus Far, other readers post. Thus Far's listing says you can report a post or reply, block a reader, or ask for a human review, and that its PageKeeper tool checks shared posts "for spoilers and community safety".
  • Both. Thus Far adds AI Book Buddies, which it says are labelled "on every post and profile" and can be switched off with one switch.

What can parents check?

  1. The age rating on the app's App Store page.
  2. Whether chat is with AI, people or both, using the table above.
  3. How AI is labelled. Look for clear labels on AI-written text and AI participants.
  4. Off switches. Thus Far lets readers turn off its Book Buddies; general chatbots and Magic Bookmark are AI by design.
  5. Data collected. Each app's privacy label is summarised in Reading app privacy labels.
  6. The book. Check the book's own audience and content, not just the app.

What about younger children?

The apps on this site are not designed for young children. If you were looking for books children can touch, lift or listen to, that is a different meaning of "interactive"; see Interactive books for kids.

Questions

  1. Q1

What age is Magic Bookmark rated?

13+ on the US App Store, with infrequent content notes including fantasy violence, crude humor, mature or suggestive themes and horror.

  2. Q2

Can a 13-year-old use ChatGPT for reading help?

ChatGPT is rated 13+ on the US App Store and lists in-app age assurance and parental controls. It is a general chatbot without a page lock, so spoilers and errors are possible.

  3. Q3

    Why is Fable rated 18+?

The listing rates it 18+ and notes it contains advertising, messaging and chat, user-generated content and social media. It does not explain the rating further.

  4. Q4

Are the AI Book Buddies in Thus Far labelled?

Yes. Thus Far's listing says they are generated by Thus Far, labelled on every post and profile, and can be turned off with one switch.
