A status check of public pages. Amazon may have changed the feature in the app without updating these pages; we did not test it.

Where does Kindle's Ask this Book stand in October 2026?

On the pages we read on 30 October 2026, Amazon still describes Ask this Book as "currently available on the Kindle iOS app in the U.S." and due to "expand to Kindle devices and the Android OS app later this year". The Authors Guild's statement, last updated 7 January 2026, still says authors cannot opt out. We found no newer Amazon announcement on either point.

What does Amazon's page say now?

Amazon's feature page was first published on 2 April 2025 and last updated on 2 July 2026 "to reflect the expansion of Recaps to web browser". Its Ask this Book section, unchanged in substance, says:

  • Ask this Book "serves as your expert reading assistant", answering questions about "plot details, character relationships, and thematic elements".
  • "All responses provide immediate, contextual information up to your current reading position, but you can also choose to ask questions about the entire book."
  • It is "currently available on the Kindle iOS app in the U.S. and will expand to Kindle devices and the Android OS app later this year."

The page's key takeaways repeat that the features are "available to U.S. customers across thousands of best-selling English-language eBooks, whether purchased or borrowed."

Where do the sources differ?

The Authors Guild's statement says Ask this Book has been available "since December 11, 2025, on certain Kindle devices and the Kinde iOS app" (their spelling), and that it was "slated for a wider rollout in 2026". Amazon's page names only the iOS app as current. Good e-Reader's launch report, dated 14 December 2025, covered the iOS app. We report both and have not confirmed which Kindle devices, if any, show the feature today.

What about authors?

The Guild's position has not changed on its page: "So far there is no way for publishers or authors to opt their books out of the feature." It says uses like Ask this Book "must be licensed and compensated" and that Amazon "should move to a permissioned, paid model". The Guild also acknowledged "the tweaks it has made since launch", without listing them. Amazon's feature page says nothing about authors. The full debate, including how bring-your-own-book apps differ, is in Are AI reading companions fair to authors?

What should Kindle readers do?

  • On iPhone in the US: use it, and keep to the default scope that stops at your position. Steps are in How to use Kindle Ask this Book.
  • On a Kindle device: check the in-book menu; Amazon's page does not yet list devices as supported, while the Guild says some are.
  • On Android: Amazon says it is coming; until then, Story So Far is also not described for Android.
  • Outside the US: the features are described for US customers only.

What will we watch for?

An Amazon announcement of Android or device availability, any author opt-out, and any change to the whole-book option. Changes will be logged here and on the timeline. The Kindle profile holds the current facts.
