When did AI reading companions arrive? A dated timeline

AI reading companions arrived in about 21 months. Fable pulled its AI reader summaries in January 2025, Amazon announced Kindle Recaps in April 2025 and launched Ask this Book in December 2025, the Authors Guild objected weeks later, and two new apps arrived in late 2026: Magic Bookmark in August and Thus Far in September. Each date below links to its source.

What does the timeline show?

  • Store features came first. Amazon's Recaps and Ask this Book work inside Kindle ebooks, where the store already has the text and your position.
  • The rights debate followed within weeks. The Authors Guild's statement came 12 days after the date it gives for Ask this Book's availability. See Are AI reading companions fair to authors?
  • Independent apps moved to other formats. Magic Bookmark and Thus Far both work with print and audio, which Kindle's features do not reach. See the comparison.
  • AI labels became a design choice. After Fable's summaries were pulled, Thus Far's listing stresses that its AI Book Buddies are labelled on every post and can be switched off.

What is not on the line?

  • Story So Far's launch date. Amazon's page introduces it with "Starting today" but the page has been updated since, so we do not assign it a date.
  • Ask this Book on Android. Amazon says it will expand to Kindle devices and the Android app "later this year"; we have not seen a dated announcement.

    The Authors Guild dates its availability from 11 December 2025, and Good e-Reader reported it live on the Kindle iOS app in the US on 14 December 2025.

    Amazon announced Recaps on 2 April 2025 for US customers.

    When did Magic Bookmark launch?

    Its US App Store version history begins with version 1.0.1 on 20 August 2026. Audiobook support arrived in version 1.1.1 on 27 October 2026.

    When did Thus Far launch?

    Its US App Store version history begins with version 1.0.1 on 19 September 2026, and book clubs arrived on 29 September.
