What changed when Magic Bookmark added audiobook support?

On 27 October 2026 Magic Bookmark released version 1.1.1 with the note "Now with audiobook support: get spoiler-free recaps for any book format." Listeners enter the last phrase they heard, which the website calls CatchPhrase, and the app syncs its recap, cast list, answers and character chat to that point. It still covers supported titles only, on iPhone.

What is new?

Version 1.1.1 is the update that brings audiobooks into the app. Until then, Magic Bookmark found your place from a photo of the page or a typed page number, which only works for print and ebooks. Audiobooks have no pages, so the new route is a phrase:

  • The App Store description now reads: "Snap a photo of your current page, or enter the last phrase you heard in an audiobook."
  • The website's FAQ says: "for audiobooks, enter the last few words you heard with CatchPhrase. We find your exact spot."

Everything else stays the same once the bookmark is set: "a recap that stops exactly where you are", a cast list "built only from what you've actually read", questions about the story so far, and chat with characters who "know the story exactly as far as you do".

Why does this matter for listeners?

Losing your place in an audiobook is a different problem from losing it in a paperback. You may know the timestamp but not the chapter, and audiobook tracks do not always match chapters. A recap tool that needs a page number cannot help. Matching a phrase to the text gets around that, because the words are the same whichever narrator or edition you hear. How that matching fits into the wider pipeline is drawn in How page-locked recaps work.

How does it compare with other options for audiobooks?

What has not changed?

  • Supported titles only. The catalog focuses on romance, fantasy, romantasy, YA, sci-fi and historical fiction; you can request a title in the app.
  • iPhone only. Android is "on the roadmap for later", per the website.
  • Per-book pricing. One Bookmark Credit per book after the free start, from $4.99 for one to $1.40 each in a 50-pack. The App Store says the first credit is free; the website describes a two-week free trial.
  • Accuracy. A phrase match can land in the wrong place if the phrase is common or misheard. Check where the app thinks you are before you read the recap; see How to check an AI recap.

How fast has the app been changing?

The US version history shows 1.0.1 on 20 August 2026, regular fixes through September, 1.0.10 on 19 October, 1.1 on 21 October ("a new flow for wrapping it up and moving on to your next read") and 1.1.1 on 27 October. That is twelve numbered releases in about ten weeks. The app had 25 ratings, averaging 4.8, on 30 October 2026. Our full Magic Bookmark profile has prices, the privacy label and limits.
